Vegetation Monitoring
Baseline research was carried out in 2005 before any of the pests were removed from Pomona and Rona Islands. Five vegetation plots on Pomona and two on Rona were surveyed by students from the University of Otago, with funding from the Leslie Hutchins Conservation Foundation.
Surveying the vegetation plots before eradicating the pests allows us to get a good understanding of the level of damage caused by browsing species such as deer and possum.
New Zealand plants are generally quite slow growing, so we waited ten years before going back to re-survey the vegetation plots on Pomona and Rona. In December 2016 volunteers, under the supervision of DOC staff, helped re-survey all vegetation plots. We have lots of data to analyse, but will post the results on our website as soon as we can.
